Population of Tomsk oblast

According to the data of the Federal State Statistic Serveice as of January 1, 2006 there were 1,036,000 residents in the Oblast, with 705,800 living in the towns and 330,700 in the country. About 50% of the population lives in the capital city of Tomsk. The population density is extremely nonuniform, being only as low as 0.3 persons per km2 in remote northern areas. The average density is 3.27 persons per km2. 80 nationalities and ethnic groups inhabit the Oblast, including 22 ethnic groups of the North. The most numerous residents are the Russians (88.2%), the Ukrainians (2.6%) and the Tatars (2.5%).
